Challenge
Array’s teams have completed work in both the Klingenstein and Guggenheim towers at Mount Sinai Hospital, renovating units on several floors sequentially to allow continuing patient care throughout the upgrades. With growing demand for Cardiac services, Mount Sinai prioritized expansion and modernization of their Cardiac ICU which serves patients with a variety of complex cardiac needs.
Solution
Utilizing full scale mock-ups of each patient room type, the team was able to validate the idealized patient room layout and that it worked within the building’s structural grid early on in the design process. With the patient rooms solidly defined, the team was then able to develop the clinical support cores for each Unit with the same rigorous understanding of the building’s available space. The final design overlaid the aesthetic solution on the functional design, resulting in a calming and restful environment.
Result
Throughout design development, Array worked closely with the physicians and clinicians who serve this patient population. The final design allowed for large, open rooms with dedicated space for the family to be integrated into the care of their loved ones. While the large shared team work areas provided space for clinicians to work together collaboratively, supporting the Medical Center’s educational mission.
