Challenge
In collaboration with Margulies Perruzzi, Array was engaged by MaineHealth to design inpatient behavioral health units within under-utilized floors at Southern Maine Health Care Medical Center. Key stakeholders established the immediate need for a minimum of 42 adult behavioral healthcare beds on three floors.
Solution
Spatial characteristics of the design such as community and family meeting spaces encourage social person-to-person encounters found in the supporting community. Utilizing Array’s Lean-led planning process, the team maximized programming and included flexibility in treatment spaces for multiple functions and space utilization.
Result
MaineHealth now has the capacity to provide exceptional behavioral healthcare to their community. The design focuses on infusing residential elements and warm colors to create a non-institutionalized environment. The space provides comfortable healing environments, enhancing patient rehabilitation. The open team center concept, which includes views to nature and daylight access, was planned to help reduce staff turnover and increase recruitment rates.
