Challenge
In an effort to provide a full spectrum of health services to the community, St. Charles Medical Center leadership determined the best course of action is a new Behavioral Health building on campus, adjacent to the main hospital. The Behavioral Health Institute envisions enhancing population health through the institution of standardized, evidence-based treatment modalities across the continuum of behavioral healthcare while endeavoring to provide quality treatment, affordable care and improved emotion health and well-being.
Solution
After visioning sessions to determine inpatient unit adjacencies and building configuration site opportunities, Array designed a 90-bed two-story addition which is connected by a two story connector to the main hospital. Outpatient, Partial Hospitalization Programs and ECT are also accommodated in this new building. A separate patient intake area is also planned to help decompress the Emergency Department.
Result
A healing environmental is now possible, with ample space for therapy rooms, activity spaces and on-unit dining. Landscaped gardens are incorporated so views from the large patient room and common area windows provide positive distractions. Access to the outdoor activity areas will also promote healing and provide a healthy outlet during treatment. Operational efficiencies are also seen through combining patient populations from their other nearby campus, St Vincent, into the new Behavioral Health Institute.
