Behavioral Health Initiative

Project photography presented in a before-and-after format to allow readers to witness the med/surg-to-behavioral health transformation.

CHALLENGE

To properly care for their constituents, Mercy Health committed to a system-wide Behavioral Health Initiative to increase inpatient beds and partial hospitalization services. The most appropriate space at their Paducah, KY, facility was a shuttered med/surg unit which required a gut renovation and safety overhaul.

SOLUTION

A 29-bed unit, segregated to accommodate both adult and geriatric populations, provides sufficient treatment space for patients. Walls were removed to open up day areas for group therapy and relaxation, as well as to create a homelike, soothing environment.

RESULT

Of the 29 beds, several strategically-located rooms flex between the two populations to accommodate census shifts, with five beds that can be assigned to either unit. A central team station in each subunit has optimal sightlines and benefits from natural light brought deep into the space by reconfiguring closed spaces into open day areas.
