Emergency Department Acute Psychiatry Unit

Challenge

Array, in collaboration with Margulies Perruzzi Architects, was engaged by MaineHealth to create a behavioral health center of excellence. With the addition of 40 inpatient psychiatric beds to the facility, the Client realized that with increased admissions, their intake volumes were going to increase significantly with the new service line and sought a way to address their needs.

Solution

Array provided behavioral healthcare planning expertise to assist with upgrading the facility’s Acute Psychiatric Unit within the Emergency Department to strengthen behavioral health intake. The team’s solution was to create a dedicated and secure Emergency Department Acute Psychiatry (EDAP) Unit with five secure assessment rooms, private TVs, a patient lounge, consult room, patient support space and team center.

Result

The Unit now accepts patients with short-term acute illnesses and provides assessment capabilities for up to a 24-hour stay. This allows staff the appropriate time to determine if patients need to be admitted to the inpatient floors or are ready for discharge.
