Array was tasked with providing planning and design services for the complete fit out of a new Central Sterile Processing Department (CSPD) for an Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) on Montefiore Medical Center’s Hutchinson Campus. The goal was for the CSPD to provide for all departments in the building, but primarily serve the 12 operating room surgery suite.
The planning and design team decided the best placement for the CSPD would be at a mid-level of the building with the ORs below and specialty services above. In order to provide for all the necessary departments as efficiently as possible, the team planned a vertical connection using a hospital cab elevator, which allows a direct connection to the clean core for re-supplying case carts as well as specialty supplies cart/lockers. A soiled elevator was also included to make the return from the semi restricted area directly into the decontamination side.
The fully functional CSPD provides for all departments by utilizing a process flow developed by the Array team. The new process starts with preparing the carts/instruments in the decontamination room, which uses sinks and ultra-sonic cleaners to pass the carts/instruments through the washers to the clean assembly side where they are prepared for terminal steam and sterilization. A cart staging is area can hold an ample number of carts for full next day case load. The CSPD is open 16 hours/day to accommodate the surgical schedules of the ASC.
