Industry Involvement

In the March/April Issue 2012 Issue of Facility Care magazine, Editor-in-Chief Emily Howard notes that responding to the increasing pressure for operational efficiency in healthcare, professional associations are joining forces to help facilities managers. In 2010, the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) and the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) worked together to release “Operations and Benchmarks for Healthcare Facilities.” The report published hospital operations data that facility managers can use to compare their facilities’ operations to those of similar institutions. The data goes beyond commonly used metrics like cost per square foot and cost per worker to adjusted patient day and adjusted discharges.

This year, the two associations have joined with Canadian Healthcare Engineering Society (CHES) to give an even broader view of facilities in North America. The goal of both efforts is to strengthen communication from the facility manager to the C-suite, allowing for more strength in proving value and meeting needs.
