Challenge
Provide high-level decision support around emergency department capacity to executive-level team. Present options that minimize capital spending.
Solution
Discrete event simulation modeling was used to produce a high-level, decision support resource. Building a model with readily available data – including average LOS, patient mix and arrival rates – allowed for the swift turn-around of a tool that answered one strategic question, “Should we use a universal resource for observation and the emergency department?”
Result
The architects presented the option of combining emergency department resources with observation area resources, which reduced total square-footage and cost. The simulation model helped the executive team see the results of various scenarios in a quick, concise manner.
