Spinal Surgery Simulation

Challenge

The growing demand for minimally invasive outpatient surgery led LSI to extend reach by offering services in additional locations. LSI administration requested a study to optimize efficiency at the expansion locations – both the physical spaces and the daily processes.

Solution

A simulation study was used to determine if the newly designed process was optimal and if the number of prep, recovery and surgical rooms is adequate for the volume of patients the outpatient spinal surgery center projects. Basing the layouts on more efficient practices leads to an easier implementation of more productive workflows, staff movement and patient routing.

Result

It was determined that the desired future state could be achieved. In this future state, where patients are moved to a Pre-Op room if the PACU is full, four Pre-Op and four PACU rooms will provide adequate space for up to 10 patients to be treated/day. The result is an improved patient experience, a more effective use of surgery center space and a decrease in patient waiting times.
