Challenge

Create a custom patient information board to occupy prime footwall real estate in each private PICU room. The orientation needed to be visible from the patient bed as well as at a height comfortable for clinicians to reach for daily updating.

Solution

The top portion of the board was designated for an colorful image that combines the themes of both The Tickle Tree and If You Hold a Seed children’s books – books highlighted throughout the unit as part of the health system’s literary theme. Areas for the patient’s photo and name have been incorporated into the design to provide the patient with a comfort level they will be recognized by all clinicians. Standard information – such as allergies, dietary limitations, etc. are filled in below.

Results

Clinicians and caregivers appreciate the customizable boards which allow them to share some of their patients’ personalities as well as make their stays less stressful. With many patients too young to self-advocate, the patient boards allow for seamless clinician change-of-shift and less downtime getting to know each patient’s particulars.
