Challenge
In a greenfield hospital, the team has the luxury of placing the Pharmacy with optimal accessibility while still considering that it does not need to occupy valuable and visible patient/visitor real estate.
Solution
Working with Health System administration and pharmacy staff, the design team coordinated the Pharmacy’s first floor location with connectivity to inpatient units and convenient supply delivery routes. The USP 800 compounding pharmacy is designed with three fume hoods to supply in- and outpatient IV mixing needs.
Result
The main pharmacy medication prep and dispensing room is a large, open area and houses refrigerator/freezer storage, carousel medication storage equipment and a pick station with flexibility in design to grow as the Medical Center does. The USP 800 space is technically-complex with both negative and positive pressure rooms to accommodate the hazardous drug prep spaces.
