Challenge
The Lebanon VA Medical Center sought a way to provide compassionate care in an interdisciplinary environment to eligible veterans within their community. They engaged Array, in partnership with Miller-Remick, to create a master plan as well as design phase 1 of a 70-bed Community Living Center (CLC).
Solution
Staff placed an emphasis on studying hospital-to-CLC connective relationships to embrace the idea of a decentralized, small house model where each house need acts as an independent residential building. The Team tested multiple site options for both connectivity and residential feels with a location at the front of campus determined to be the optimal location.
Result
Ultimately, the intent of a residential approach led to the team opting for a location with a view toward a grove of trees, which provides a visual buffer between the multistory hospital and the one-story CLC. Amenities such as porches, communal dining and lounge areas are included in the design to provide the most homelike environment.
