Pediatric Emergency Department

Challenge

The pediatric staff of White Plains Hospital sought to have a dedicated unit to admit and treat pediatric patients separately from the adult Emergency Department. The Client’s goal was to develop a program and space dedicated to providing services unique to these patients with the compassion and comprehensive care expected from a Montefiore facility and the White Plains community.

Solution

As the only combined pediatric-dedicated emergency and inpatient unit in New York State, this space not only answers the call for a space with a specialized treatment team to provide much needed care, but also allows for the swing space between emergency care and med/surg capabilities often seen in a community hospital’s pediatric setting.

Result

The new pediatric emergency department is a child-centric space, where both young children as well as teens can feel welcome and at ease. This new space provides families with a comfortable, non-institutional setting to receive both emergency and inpatient care. Pediatric patients often need extended observation after an emergency situation and the adjacencies offered by this combined unit accomplishes a uniform continuum of care in a family-unit centered environment.
