As part of the Array’s analysis and master planning efforts for the modernization of St. John Medical Center, increasing capacity of inpatient units was a high priority, especially relieving capacity limitations in the intensive and critical care units. Situated next to the surgery platform, the opportunity to expand these units in their current location was limited.
Array’s solution – expanding the eight-bed intermediate care unit on the fourth floor – required relocation of the fourth floor pediatrics unit. Array’s design of a significant addition at the Medical Center’s west side provided the necessary pediatric space in a new and more accessible, family-friendly unit.
Upon relocation of the pediatric unit, the renovation of the fourth floor provided 21 progressive care beds. Each private room accommodates patients at many acuity levels. Nine of the rooms are equipped similar to intensive care rooms for an increased concentration of nursing care and visual observation. The remaining single-occupancy rooms are for the lower acuity patients not quite ready to transfer to a medical/surgical unit. These rooms are updated with more teledata capacity and patient monitoring equipment, an improved nurse call and code blue system, medical gases, new lighting and improved finishes.
