Ambulatory Care Centers

Lambertville Medical Office Building

Challenge

Hunterdon Healthcare Systems mission to deliver compassionate and exceptional care that improves the health of the community, sought to expand existing services in the neighboring City of Lambertville, New Jersey. The project looks to augment services and amenities for an established Family Practice, nearly doubling the program size with capacity for future expansion on a steeply sloped heavily wooded site.

Solution

A new Family Practice and Wellness Center is planned to allow a much need expansion of services in the community. The two-story building finds opportunity in a complex site, advantageously nestling itself into the hillside which will allow for multiple entries for staff and patients. The entries and public circulation are connected by a multi-story space, which positions the main programatic components of the building to take advantage of the heavily wooded vistas.

Result

Architecturally, the building is composed of indigenous materials arranged to form a series of stacked stone walls and landscaped roof planes, blurring the line between building and landscape. A regimented facade of stone piers and glass is carefully articulated to ground the building to the landscape, while simultaneously shading the interior of the spaces from the predominantly western exposure. Openings are created to public spaces as moments of transparency, further connecting the logic of the exposing the interiority of the building to natural surroundings.
