Improving ED Experience with a Rapid Lean Design Event

Challenge

While front lobby improvements were agreed upon, a throughput analysis and thorough re-thinking of the check-in and triage area had to be tackled first in order to allow physical layout options provide optimal efficiencies.

Solution

A future state which provided for enhanced patient privacy, more efficient handling of fast-track cases and bedside registration of acute patients will allow this ED to re-purpose much of their front-door spaces and minimize costly re-design since the available square footage is adequate.

Result

The team’s creative reuse of existing space and reorganization of their triage protocols allowed a new, more efficient model to emerge which quickly gets patients to the right treatment area and reserves highly trained clinical staff for the most acute patients.
